The Leadership Fund

BFAWU's project worker at the SUL Leadership eventStrong leadership is essential at all levels of the trade union movement, from the workplace Union Learning Representative to the General Secretary. Effective leadership involves many aspects, including organisational and communication skills, and the ability to inspire others to become actively involved in their trade union.

The STUC has been successful in securing funding from the Scottish Government’s Fair Work Directorate to help develop leadership capacity within the trade union movement in Scotland. A number of unions developed and delivered pilot activities focused on leadership in 2015/16, and it is hoped that this will encourage the development of future trade union leadership programmes in 2016/17.

Unions who took part in this work came together at a final event in March 2016 where they shared learning, reflected on challenges and discussed next steps. Three of the unions (Aegis, BFAWU and EIS) also presented their work at the Scottish Union Learning “Dynamics of Union Leadership” fringe event at the STUC Congress in Dundee in April 2016.

The following unions took part in the project in 2015/16:

  • Aegis
  • BFAWU
  • EIS
  • GMB
  • FDA
  • PCS
  • UCATT
  • Unite
  • Usdaw

Applications will open soon for the 2016/17 funding.
