Trade Union Week

From: December 4th 2006 until December 7th 2006

The first Trade Union Week will be held at the Scottish Parliament in December 2006. The week of events is designed to showcase the STUC's and affiliated union's campaigns, priorities and interests in and around the Parliament. As the main political parties are currently developing their respective policies and manifestos they will take to the electorate in May next year, the week will provide the STUC with an excellent opportunity to meet with them individually to highlight trade union priorities for 2007 - 2011.

The week will also enable the STUC to maximise formal engagement with MSPs and the main political parties in the Parliament through a series of other events. Each day there will be different exhibitions of current STUC projects funded in part or fully by the Scottish Executive, including the Skills & Lifelong Learning Team and its work in Scottish union learning. An evening reception for MSPs is also planned, as the highlight of the week, showcasing the STUC's work in the Scottish Parliament and in particular the organisation's work around lifelong learning.

Many Local Learning Forums across Scotland will hold local events leading up to and during Trade Union Week. Up to 30 ULRs will participate in each Local Learning Forum, which could include meeting with an MSP in their locality to raise issues about the future of union led lifelong learning.

ULRs will travel to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to participate in a meeting that will discuss the lifelong learning agenda with MSPs and Parliamentary Assistants on Wednesday, 6th December. The meeting will include a presentation of trade union learning achievement and a discussion of how local Union Learning Reps see the path of trade union led lifelong learning in the future.

ULRs will have an opportunity to highlight their main concerns regarding lifelong learning. This opportunity will give ULRs and Local Learning Forums a chance to infl uence the lifelong learning agenda throughout Scotland.
