For Immediate Release
Using new writing skills gained through union-led learning in the workplace, postal workers with top stories have a chance to win a Nintendo DSI or a day-in-lieu, awarded by the employer. The summer months can be a quiet time for higher education, but this was not the case for members of the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) based in the Glasgow Royal Mail Centre. Lead Union Learning Rep Brian Regan responded to his colleagues’ requests for writing classes and organised a 10-week course in Creative Writing, administered by the Workers’ Education Association (WEA) in the workplace learning centre.
Lead Union Learning Rep Brian Regan said, “The course gave postal workers the chance to sharpen their writing skills and have a bit of fun at the same time. It was magic to watch my colleagues grow in self-confidence as they learned new skills, especially with the support of the union and the employer.”
Brian later organised a short story competition which ran until early September. Prizes were donated for the top stories by the Royal Mail, CWU, Key2Learn Centre and WEA. All of the authors who entered will receive £10 in book tokens to reward the hard work and effort put into their stories.
