For Immediate Release
Scottish Union Learning published its first Annual Report today, which details the first year and a half of trade union learning activity in Scotland under the new banner.
Over 7,000 learners accessed workplace learning through trade unions during the first year of the Scottish Union Learning Fund (SULF) Round 7. In addition, 1,379 individuals accessed learning opportunities for core skills, literacy and numeracy.
Also during the first year, 27 new learning agreements were signed with employers in Scotland. According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s 2001 Training and Development Survey, when unions are directly involved in training policy decision at company level, firms are more likely to adopt practices which contribute to high-trust, high-performance workplaces. Learning agreements can help facilitate the level of union involvement in training policy with a company. A formal agreement between a union and an employer on time off can avoid misunderstanding and ensure fair and reasonable treatment for all workers.
