Trade Unions Improve Skills

February 25th 2010

For Immediate Release

Today (25 February) Scottish trade unions will gather in Glasgow to explore improving literacy and numeracy in the workplace. Delegates from around Scotland will look at “Improving Everyday Skills in the Current Economic Climate” at the 2nd Annual Scottish Union Learning Everyday Skills Event.

This national event, to be held in the Teacher Building in Glasgow, will bring together around 100 delegates from Strathclyde, Fort William, Fife, Inverness, Edinburgh, Stirling and Tayside, representing 12 trade unions from all sectors. Delegates will participate in themed sessions on issues including retaining and sustaining employment through learning and financial literacy.

Sylvia O’Grady, Scottish Union Learning Manager, said:

“In the current economic climate, trade unions are rising to meet the additional challenges facing the workforce. Raising the profile of everyday skills issues, through events like this, will help enable trade unions and Union Learning Reps provide better support to the workers who need workplace learning opportunities the most.”
