Planning for Scotland’s Economic Recovery Through Union Learning

In response to the economic challenges currently facing Scotland, trade unions will meet in Dundee on Thursday (19 November) to explore solutions through workplace learning. Over 200 Union Learning Representatives from workplaces across Scotland will gather for the Annual Scottish Union Learning Conference.

Addressing the Scottish Union Learning Conference in the Apex City Hotel on Thursday (19th November), the STUC will renew its call on the Scottish Government to set up a campaign aimed specifically at employers to encourage continued investment in training during the recession.

Using new writing skills gained through union-led learning in the workplace, postal workers with top stories have a chance to win a Nintendo DSI or a day-in-lieu, awarded by the employer. The summer months can be a quiet time for higher education, but this was not the case for members of the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) based in the Glasgow Royal Mail Centre. Lead Union Learning Rep Brian Regan responded to his colleagues’ requests for writing classes and organised a 10-week course in Creative Writing, administered by the Workers’ Education Association (WEA) in the workplace learning centre.
