On 7 June 2017 as part of the Xpo North festival at Eden Court in Inverness BECTU ran the popular “Hit the Ground Running” course. Hit the Ground Running is an intensive and interactive industry training course for entry-level positions in film & TV drama.

The course consisted of a comprehensive series of practical exercises designed to equip participants with the knowledge, tools, experience and confidence to help them progress their career in the industry.

Developed in consultation with freelance practitioners, the course was delivered by Linda Fraser, and BECTU Project Worker, Alison Goring. The course was funded by Scottish Union Learning. Alison said: “Delivering Hit the Ground Running at XpoNorth is a highlight of our year, and we are delighted to have become an integral part of the festival. It’s very exciting to reach so many young people in the Highlands and Islands, giving them a real understanding of the screen industry and how it works as well as equipping them some really practical skills.”

Participants thoroughly enjoyed the course, one said that it had been a huge boost in their knowledge of the industry and their confidence; and another felt that the course gave a real insight into how the industry works and what people can do to enter it in the best possible way. Linda Fraser, course tutor, said that the subsequent supportive learning environment meant all learners were comfortable in contributing, asking questions and fully participating in all the tasks; "We had a terrific room at Eden Court and being part of the XpoNorth festival certainly adds a great deal of energy and excitement to the overall staging of the course."
