Making Learning Accessible in the Highlands and Islands

On Friday, 10 June 2016, Union Learning Reps (ULRs) will gather together at the 9th Annual Scottish Union Learning Highlands and Islands Learning Conference held in Inverness College UHI. Delegates will travel from workplaces across the region, including South Uist, Thurso, Lerwick and Orkney, to attend the event. The theme of the Conference will be ‘Unions and Online Learning - Making Learning Accessible to All’.

The Conference will be addressed by Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary. Tara Morrison, Programme Leader at Inverness College UHI, will lead a discussion on ‘The loneliness of the Long-distance Online Learner?’ in a session that challenges the myths of the online learning environment.

Throughout the Conference, delegates will explore the potential of online technology to increase access to learning and find out how to develop workplace learning opportunities around digital skills.

Other key points on the day will include:

  • A series of digital-themed workshop sessions, designed specifically for Union Learning Reps, to help learners access the wealth of resources and learning opportunities available online. Topics will include Opening Pathways to Higher Education; BKSB: The Key to Enabling Learners Progress and Succeed in Learning; A World of Free Learning at your Fingertips; and Online Learning for People with Sight and/or Hearing Loss;
  • Author and award-winning journalist, Catherine Deveney, will explore the impact of technology on reading habits;
  • Catherine Garvie, Development Officer, Scottish Union Learning, will provide delegates on developments in ‘Digital Unions’.
