Scottish Union Learning Fund (SULF)

The Scottish Union Learning Fund (SULF) was established in 2000 by the then Scottish Executive with the primary aim 'to help promote activity by trade unions in support of the Scottish Executive's lifelong learning programme'. Investment including the SULF 6 allocation was £6.35 million. This investment reflects recognition of the leading role trade unions can play in raising the demand for workplace learning through partnership working with employers and other stakeholders to motivate individuals to participate in lifelong learning.

The new Scottish Government announced in November 2007 that they would continue the fund and have committed a further £2.4m over the next three years. This has allowed a further round of SULF to take place. A total of 15 projects have been awarded funding SULF 7 for projects to be delivered between 1st April 2008 and 31st March 2011. The projects are expected to play a major part in the delivery of workplace learning within the Scottish Government’s recently published skills strategy.

The new round of SULF 7 funding of £2.4 million brings the total fund since inception to £8.75m. The fund is still intended to ensure effective and sustainable activity by trade unions and their partners. The emphasis of the fund, since its inception, has been on building up trade unions' capacity to promote people development and workplace learning by encouraging and supporting learners.
