Building Union Learning: Developing Fair Work in the workplace

Union Learning Reps and Project Workers/Union Learning Organisers from across Scotland gathered at City of Glasgow College in November to join Scottish Union Learning’s annual Conference, developed in partnership with TUC Education. The theme of the event was ‘Building Union Learning: Developing Fair Work in the workplace’.

Project Workers/Union Learning Organisers worked with Scottish Union Learning to develop a series of Union Learning Development Days (ULDDs) across LUPs. ULRs were keen to have ongoing skills development programmes delivered in their local areas, building on a similar model to SUL’s previous Local Learning Forums.

Scottish Union Learning Fringe Event 28 April

Scottish Union Learning (SUL) organised a Fringe Event on Monday, 28 April, at the 2025 STUC Congress in Caird Hall, Dundee. The theme was: ‘Developing skills for Union Learning Reps’, with the panel and guests discussing existing good practice and ways to support Union Learning Rep development in the future.

Guests were welcomed by Wendy Burton, Director of SUL, and the event was chaired by Tommy Breslin, Senior Development Officer, SUL. The panel included Gail Bell, Learning Organiser, PCS; Dan Henderson, Learning Organiser, RMT; and Catherine Garvie, Senior Development Officer, Scottish Union Learning. The Event was sponsored by TUC Education Scotland, and was well attended, with guests including Steven Black, member of Unite the Union and recipient of the 2025 STUC Helen Dowie Award for Lifelong Learning, and Sean Paul Gracie, member of Community and recipient of the 2025 Scottish Union Learning Learner of the Year Award.

STUC Apprenticeships Event 2025

As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, the 3rd Annual STUC Apprenticeships Event was held on Friday, 7th March in the Margaret Irwin Centre, Glasgow, with support from TUC Education in Scotland. The theme of the event was ‘Skills for Now and The Future’ with a focus on equipping apprentices with skills for progressing in the workplace.
