Zero Waste Scotland

Zero Waste Scotland is funded by the Scottish Government to support the delivery of its Circular Economy Strategy and other low carbon and resource efficiency policy priorities. They provide support, guidance and, in some cases, funding to a wide range of partner organisations. This includes private businesses, the public sector, local authorities, community groups, industry bodies and unions.

Low Carbon Skills Fund

Unions may be interested to note that Skills Development Scotland have now launched the Low Carbon Skills Fund for this financial year. This enables employers to access up to £5,000 worth of funding to undertake training and to support sustainable development and growth. The fund gives any Scottish business with fewer than 100 employees the opportunity to apply for up to £5000 towards employee training costs in areas such as renewable energy and low-carbon technologies, energy efficiency, waste management and reuse, and reducing carbon in supply and energy management.

Creating opportunities for young people in the Highlands and Islands

Twelve workers located from Caithness to Argyll, with a wide range of creative ambitions, have embarked on a learning journey to achieve the National Certificate in Creative Industries. The study programme is the result of a partnership between Scottish Union Learning and Inverness College UHI, and is supported by Scottish Government, the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), and BECTU, the broadcasting and entertainment union.

The pilot programme aims to provide pathways into creative careers for young people, or a stepping stone to further study. A key objective is to provide access to learning for students living in the Highlands and Islands, through delivery of an online course, developed by Inverness College UHI, which will be supplemented by supported workshops.

Everyday Skills Event: Developing the Workforce

This Event is an opportunity to explore current Everyday Skills initiatives in workplace learning and skills development, and to demonstrate and celebrate the valuable work that trade unions, particularly Union Learning Reps, do to promote and support learning in the workplace.
