Highlands Union Learning Opens Doors and Changes Lives

Scottish trade unions will gather at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness on Friday, 8 June for the 11th Annual Scottish Union Learning Highlands and Islands Learning Conference.

Delegates from trade unions and workplaces across the Highlands and Islands will come together to explore the theme: ‘Union Learning: Opening Doors, Changing Lives’ through workshops and listening to invited speakers. The Conference will be addressed by Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary, Fiona Bruce, Dounreay Women’s Network, and Priscilla Maramba of UNISON, who was named the 2017 Learner of the Year by Scottish Union Learning.

Eleanor Adam, Scottish Union Learning Development Officer – Highlands and Islands, said:

“Trade unions offer dedicated support to workers in the Highlands and Islands, many of whom have additional struggles not experienced elsewhere in Scotland, such as distance and remoteness. That’s why the theme of this year’s Conference addresses how workers can access and overcome traditional and additional barriers to learning, such as a lack of finance, paid time off, and inequality, with a specific focus on the needs of learners in the Highlands and Islands.”
