Digital Unions: Cyber Resilience

PFA Scotland undertakes a Cyber Resilience Workshop.

Nowadays our computers, phones and tablets are filled with personal information – how can we keep that sensitive information out of the wrong hands? How can we protect ourselves online, spot potential attacks and feel more confident about using technology safely?

‘Cyber Resilience’ means being able to prepare for, combat, rapidly recover and learn from deliberate attacks, or accidental events that have a disruptive effect on interconnected technologies.

‘Cyber Security’ is a key element of being resilient, but cyber resilient people and organisations recognise that being safe online goes far beyond just technical measures. By developing understanding of cyber risks and threats, they are able to take the appropriate measures to stay safe online.

2024-25 Cyber Resilience Project

Building on the success of previous Digital Unions and Cyber Resilience projects, Scottish Union Learning was awarded further funding from Scottish Government’s Cyber Resilience Unit to develop cyber resilience in workplaces during 2024-2025.

Working in partnership with Digital Skills Education Ltd, the project continued to build workplace cyber skills by providing a series of cyber security interactive workshops, ‘Train-the-Trainer’ sessions using the online cyber workers’ toolkit and developed a new set of online video cyber lessons for Reps, members, and workers. The training provided the opportunity to gain experience and learn more about the most common type of cyber security attacks which occur frequently online (especially now many people are still working from home), how to spot attacks, different types of scams, how to store data securely and more importantly how to take steps to stay protected online. The workshops helped learners feel more confident about using their devices safely and how to cultivate a more positive relationship with technology and data.

Evaluation and Impact Reports

During 2017 to 2024, over an abridged period of 48 months, 7993 reps and workers attended cyber security workshops. The 2024-25 Cyber Resilience project carried out an evaluation of 5,915 learners who responded to an initial questionnaire and a more in-depth evaluation of 1,345 learners. In addition, an Impact Report targeting 500 learners was conducted by Digital Skills Education Ltd. over a more recent 18-month period, with 110 respondents. View these reports in the ‘Related Resources’ section of this webpage.

Safe for Work Playlist

A further need for training was identified in this area based on previous demand and feedback from both evaluations. This was followed up by the production and delivery of a ‘Train the Trainer’ cascading skills ‘Safe for Work’ playlist, which was designed to empower workers with key cyber resilience skills, and consisted of 25 interactive video lessons. Access this playlist in the ‘Related Resources’ section of this webpage.
