Safety first for top union member
Glasgow resident William Reynolds takes home top union prize for health and safety.

NASUWT member William Reynolds has taken home the Frank Maguire Award for Health and Safety at the STUC annual congress.
The STUC, Scotland’s largest trade union body, awarded the Glasgow native the top prize for his commitment to health and safety following his work on tackling abuse and violence against teachers at Bannerman High School.
William has been a long standing rep within the school and over an extended period has demonstrated an exemplary record of taking steps, all the way up to industrial action, to protect his members against assaults at work, on the sure foundation that no teacher should ever have to experience abuse in the classroom.

LGBT+ campaigner wins trade union Equality Award
Fife based trainee pharmacist Soh Xi Ken wins STUC Equality Award

One of Scotland’s leading LGBT+ campaigners has been recognised for his advocacy work for LGBT+ pharmacists in Scotland.
Soh Xi Ken of the Pharmacists Defence Association (PDA) received the Equality Award at the STUC Annual Congress this week in Dundee. The award praised Xi Ken’s tireless advocacy for LGBT+ workers within pharmacies in Scotland, highlighting his personal experience of homophobia in Scotland and his home country, Malaysia.
In May 2021, Xi Ken became a founding member of the PDA LGBT+ Pharmacists network committee and was elected as their first Honorary Secretary. The PDA LGBT+ network is the first of its kind in the pharmacy world and has made significant difference to the profile of LGBT+ people amongst the profession.
Learning At Work Week
This week is #LearningAtWorkWeek, where adult learning completed through the workplace is celebrated. Learning At Work Week aims to shine a light on the importance of adult learning, and lifelong skills development.
Learning At Work Week is important, and beneficial, for workers and their employers, no matter the size of the organisation or the sector they work in. Workers who engage in learning and skills development related to their employment are more productive in their work (Kis., 2016), more likely to remain loyal to an organisation which has invested in their education and skills training (Workers’ Educational Association, 2023), and, in the case of union-led learning, serves as an effective recruitment tool to the trade union, especially when other methods of recruitment have failed (Findlay, 2011).
